Day 30 of 40 days of devotion

Written by Mark Berry

Great! I thought. A season of devotion can be a focus for getting me fitter in body and soul. And so it’s proved; listening to the Bible in One Year and worship CDs on my journey to work each morning is certainly more edifying than John Humphries or Chris Evans. Foregoing cakes, biscuits and sweets is improving my health and weight. However, I’ve found no time to fulfil my aspiration to exercise more through walking further from my car to the office morning and evening. That can wait until I finish my current job for I am on the cusp of a change.

Change can be exciting and daunting in equal measure and it’s important to keep focused on God. I have been struck by the simple trust of the Psalmist, as he endured periods of great challenge.

But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; Ps 31:15

We wait in hope for the Lord…for we trust in his holy name. Ps 33:20-21

Nicky Gumbel’s voice speaks right into my heart: “The key to winning your battles is not to rely on your own strength, but to put your trust in God.”

I know this well, but on this morning the words hit me with renewed power. God is in control! Just trust him and stop striving.

He’s got my future in hand. This is a basic but truly profound truth. If I can get it deep into my spirit, I will be invincible. Let me declare with the Psalmist: “As for me, I trust the Lord.” Ps 31:6
