Day 11 of 40 days of devotion

Written by Matt Hoyes

Fun? Absolutely not. Amazing? Absolutely.

“I’m not sure I’ve read all the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament” he thought, “40 days of devotion – what a great time to do it” he said, “should be fun” he decided…
Fun? Absolutely not. Amazing? Absolutely.

For these 40 days instead of reading my historical fiction escapist bolt holes of Bernard Conwell and Simon Scarrow I’m with Nahum, Amos, Obadiah and friends. Reading 12 books in 40 days might sound impressive but out of the 12 books half are 3 chapters or less!

So far I’ve read Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, I’ll finish Amos today and my eyes have been opened to how comfortable I’ve got with God. I guess the fear of the Lord has dulled over the years, almost as if it’s just turned into head knowledge. Ask Amos what it would be like to face God without Jesus by your side; “It’ll be as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him.” That is a hopelessly frightening sandwich to be in!

After 40 days of this I don’t believe God’s plan is for me to be a quivering wreck but if this first week is anything to go by, come Good Friday I’m going to see the cross in a fresher more desperately grateful light – that it was Him instead of me.
Amazing? Absolutely.
